This week’s Speedo Tip of the Week comes from 2003 World University Games gold medalist Dan Westcott, who offers some advice on making the transition to those longer butterfly events. Follow these tips, and no one will be pulling you out of the pool with a crane at the end of your race.
Westcott’s Tip:
I still remember the first 100m fly I swam. When I finished, my mom jokingly said, “We need a crane for Lane 4,” because I could barely get out of the pool.
I would suggest three important things to think about (when swimming a longer butterfly event for the first time):
Find your natural rhythm. This should be done at practice, and you should probably start at shorter distances. You'll find that there is a nice balance between a sprinting stroke and a slow, sluggish stroke.
Relax. This newer, longer distance will require you to remain relaxed during the race. Try not to tense up your body too much, and learn to relax the muscles you aren't using. You'll be able to hold your stroke together and swim much faster (the entire length) if you can learn to swim relaxed.
Be confident. When you're in your race, know that all your hard work in practice has prepared you for this race and that you can go head-to-head with anyone.
