=4101&mid=11657
FREESTYLE ROTATION: ROTATE FORWARD, NOT SIDE-TO-SIDE
BY RUSSELL MARK // HIGH PERFORMANCE CONSULTANT
Rotation is an important part of freestyle, but how much should you really do it? The stroke takes place much more on your stomach than it does on your side. The best freestylers rotate their shoulders to either side about 30 degrees from the surface, meaning that they never even rotate halfway onto their side (which would be 90 degrees).
Rotate forward. It helps lengthen your stroke and sets you up for the best catch.
At the end of each arm recovery and as your arm enters the water, drive and extend your arms and shoulders forward. Your shoulders will naturally pivot when you do that, and that is all the rotation that is needed.
Keep your shoulders next to your cheekbone when your arm is extended all the way forward. If your shoulders rotate any further down in front of your face, your arm might be too narrow to get a good catch when you start pulling.
Take a look at this sample of some of the best freestylers in the United States. Notice how much they’re rotated from the surface of the water and the position of their arms.
Additional Notes About Freestyle Rotation:
The hips should the same amount as the shoulders(髋部的滚动幅度最多等同于肩部), if not less. If the hips rotate too much, it’s very difficult to maintain a steady kick. That’s the reason why a lot of swimmers’ kicks stop when they breathe…because the hips are incorrectly rotating too much to the breathing side.
