Many breaststrokers let the hands get stuck at the chest when they breathe. Let's fix that! Steve Haufler sets up the problem, and offers the first of this week's solutions.
Common Breaststroke Mistakes and How to Fix Them
Mistake #4: Improper Pull
The problem: pausing while breathing
The fix: Breaststroke Pull with Flutter Kick.
Swimmers should not pause at any point in the pull except on the glide. Some swimmers get stuck when they pull too far back…
…or they let the hands get stuck when they take a breath.
Others pause because they are abruptly changing the pitch of their hands before they shoot.
The best drill to help a swimmer correct a pause in the pull is breaststroke pull with flutter kick. The kick must be a continuous flutter action.
This works even better with fins, especially for swimmers who have trouble with flutter kick. Fins allow them to focus on the pull rather than worry about AIR.
Because of the constant forward propulsion from the kick, the swimmer will be more aware of “dead spots” in their pull and will be able to self-correct.
Make sure they don’t pull too far back.
And make sure they accelerate their hands on the scoop and shoot. |
