If you want to be able to breathe in freestyle, without allowing the lead hand to be used for leverage, you’ll need to learn core body balance. These are old drills but with a more detailed focus. Too many swimmers push down when they take a breath, so these simple drills that can be incorporated into any practice will help the long-term overall development and understanding of the athlete. The feelings that can be developed can also help the swimmers discover other areas that they are not being as productive as they could be. The sooner swimmers learn the importance of extension, the better able they will be to carry that skill through to their other strokes.
