To really master rhythmic breathing, let’s really look at the inhale and exhale while doing standing bobs. Our swimmer has his mouth slightly open, but you can see there is no air coming out of the mouth. When exhaling, make sure you remember to exhale through the nose. This helps to keep water out of the nostrils. Don’t blast the air out, but a relaxed exhale keeps the air going in the right direction longer. When you come above the water, open your mouth wider and fill your lungs with air. Exhale through the nose while under. Inhale through the mouth while above. IF you still have some water going into your nose in this exercise, before you breathe in, purse your lips and give a quick blast of air OUT through the nose. This clears the nostrils, and then open your mouth and breath in. If you need to use this method, it’s important to remember to NOT blow out all of your air underwater. You’ll need to save a little for the purge prior to the breath. |
