Resolution #3: Maintain momentum off the walls by breathing on the second or third arm stroke, not the first!
A quick drill you can incorporate into any practice.
When swimmers get tired, too many of them default to breathing on the 1st arm stroke as they come off the wall. This drill gets them to think about alternating between the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and even the 4th arm stroke.
The type of drill that forces you to do something really wrong is typically referred as a contrast drill, which means you're trying all ends of a spectrum to discover the one that actually works best for you.
In this case, the "contrast" is taking the breath on the 1st arm stroke on the initial pushoff. This is when the swimmers have the most air, and are carrying the greatest velocity. If you force them to mimic a habit when they don't need to do the incorrect technique, they'll better understand why they shouldn't do the incorrect technique at ANY point. |
