Did you know?
A study in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research showed that doing core stabilization exercises in the cool-down period following intense anaerobic work can help to more effectively reduce blood lactate levels than just passively resting (1).
It's unclear whether the reduced lactate levels were due to improved blood flow during the exercises, or enhanced uptake into the core musculature. Regardless of the mechanism, it appears that an active recovery period is the preferred way to help clear lactate from your system. Plus, doing core stabilization work like planks, side planks and birddogs carries with it the added benefit of improving both strength and postural control.
