The uncertainty over high-tech swimsuits is likely to extend into the world championships in July. Cornel Marculescu, FINA’s executive director, said this year was a “transition period” before tougher suit regulations are created for 2010.
FINA, the sport’s international governing body, has struggled to keep pace as racers competing in the latest buoyancy-aiding and water-resistant designs have set 126 records in the last 16 months. The world championships will begin in Rome in two months with many medal contenders still unsure which suits they can wear and if recent world records will be allowed to stand. “We need to control this technology,” Marculescu said. “We need to do it by scientific proof. There is no scientific evidence today to say one swimsuit is better than another swimsuit.”
