The most important skill in swimming is knowing how to breathe. And no matter how fast you are as a swimmer, there are ways to improve your breathing technique so you can swim even faster. Here are some things to think about as you watch the following clips. Exhale immediately. If you suck and tuck your air, you’ll quickly feel the need for more air. Don’t hold your breath. Hum out your air and hold a little in reserve. If you don’t let it all out, you won’t need as much on the next breath. Don’t wait until the last second to start your exhale. If you wait too long, you will compensate by turning your head toward the sky or ceiling, which can cause your hand to cross the centerline. And this, in turn, may cause you to take a big, splayed kick to keep your body from rolling over. Finish the exhale before your mouth clears the water for your next breath.
