My father would say that the best thing he did was to throw away his stopwatch early in our swimming careers. Other than the obvious commitment (financial, time), I think the best things my parents did for us were that they always tried to be there for us no matter how we swam and often that meant not saying anything, but being a shoulder to lean on. My parents were positive and tried not to say anything negative about our coaches or the program or to voice any doubts about our ability. They often knew of the goals we had set for ourselves and never said "You can't do that" even though I am sure there were times when they may have thought that.
