This week's Speedo Tip of the Week comes from Lea Maurer, the 1992 Olympic bronze medalist in the 100m back. Maurer offers some advice concerning backstroke mechanics.
Maurer's Tip:
I will try my best to give you my best backstoke tips. First of all, it is easier to balance when you remain flat. But if you can find a way to float while you rotate from side to side this will really help your stroke. Also, rather than thinking about your shoulders, I would urge you to think HIPS. For example, if your right hand is at the catch, the first thing you should think about it getting your right hip up toward the surface of the water. You want the hip to lead your arm and you want the hip out of the way by the time you are at the finish. The other tips that I could give you are:
Work on your underwater dolphin kick and your surface kick
Work on your rate -- Swim a few 25's where you hold your feet still and try to generate a fast rate.
Rather than worrying about keeping your shoulders still, think about keeping your head still.
Accelerate into the turns.
