MUNCIE, Ind. – While swimming was not necessarily Chris Krupa’s first choice for competition, the sophomore standout has been making his mark in the pool for nearly 15 years.

“When I was around seven years old, I would go to work with my mom at a recreation center,” Krupa says. “She didn’t want me hanging around her office all the time, so I would swim literally all day.”

The native of Indianapolis and Pike High School graduate will look to continue his dominance in the pool this week at the Mid-American Conference Championships in Ypsilanti, Mich. The 2010 league event begins Thursday.

Entering this week’s championship, Krupa ranks 10th in the league in both the 100 (51.64) and 200 (1:56.83) butterfly events.

“He’s really matured,” BSU head coach Bob Thomas says. “His races have improved by leaps and bounds.”

Krupa, who earned his first letter in swimming last year as the team’s Most Outstanding Freshman, is a telecommunications major at Ball State.

“In one of my TCOM classes, I had to do an autobiography,” Krupa says. “I chose the pool as the location to talk about my life. Swimming intermingles with TCOM. It’s my life.”
