If you’ve never used a snorkel, this would be a good time to start learning how to use one. First, we like the FINIS Stability Snorkel. The design has very little of the snorkel pressing against the forehead which makes it more comfortable and more stable. Start by biting softly on the mouthpiece and then positioning the snorkel against your forehead. Strech the straps over the back of your head and that’s it. If you’ve not used a snorkel, don’t start swimming just yet. First learn what it feels like to breathe through the snorkel. With both hands on the side of the pool, lower just your face into the water and start to slowly breathe in through your mouth and out through your nose. Practice this for a while hanging on to the wall for safety. Continue to practice breathing at the wall until you’re confident in your use of the snorkel. When you first pushoff the wall with the snorkel, make sure it’s positioned correctly and make some small adjustments to the mouthpiece or strap before you start swimming or drilling. Protecting the nose is very important, so continue to practice on the side breathing IN through the mouth and OUT through the nose. Having the hands holding on to the side will help you remain confident and secure while learning.
