Push off the wall on your back, our swimmer starts in the streamline position, but you can also start in the Position 11 Back Kick that you learned in the previous chapter.

When he gets comfortable, he lets one arm fall down to his side.
While staying flat on his back he keeps one arm extended above his shoulder, as you practiced in Position 11, only with one arm.
After you’ve practiced the flat kick for a while and with both arms, you can move toward a slight bit of tilt or rotation. If the LEFT arm is still extended, then the RIGHT shoulder should be rotated slightly out of the water.
If the RIGHT arm is extended, then the LEFT shoulder will be rotated slightly out of the water.
This swimmer is following the saying of, “eyes up, palm up” to make sure he’s not using the lead hand for leverage.
Practice this position for full-lengths to really learn how much rotation you can have without falling out of balance.
Keep the kick relaxed and comfortable and remember, the side of the goggles should be very close to the surface of the water.
Finally, make sure you focus on your head position. When the body starts to rotate to one side, the eyes must remain absolutely still, looking directly up.
