Learning a low breath helps to keep you balanced in freestyle. By avoiding going UP to air, your body will have a lower profile, spend less time going up and down, and more time going forward. When you breathe on freestyle, the goal is to have one goggle out of the water, and one goggle still IN the water. While this can be a bit scary for newer swimmers, you can see that our swimmer not only has one goggle in the water, but you can also see that only a part of his mouth is above the water when he breathes. While this swimmer does rotate her head just a bit more, we still see part of her goggle underwater, only half of her mouth above water, while still getting full breaths. This is all about how the water flows as it passes by your face. While you’re moving forward, the flow of the water will be going passed your mouth. The water won’t turn a sharp corner and all of the sudden go into your mouth, so even though it looks like these swimmers have the ability to breathe underwater, they’re really just have the understanding of how water works. When you first try this, obviously start for short distances, and in shallow water. If you’re having trouble, always revisit the basic balance videos and remember… the better balanced you are, the easier it will be to stay low when you take a breath. |
