Beyond the High Elbow Catch
The High Elbow Catch, or early verticle forearm, is an extremely important skill for any freestyle swimmer. However, there's so much more to the stroke than just that! Watch the videos this week to learn exactly what we're talking about.
Monday- Ready to explore beyond a high-elbow pull? This week's focus is pulling from the elbow.
Tuesday- Kara Lynn Joyce has definitely mastered the high-elbow pull. But look closer -- at the inside of her elbows. Try thinking about pulling with the inside of the elbow, rather than with the palm and forearm, and feel what happens to your pull and overall arm position.
Wednesday- Jason Lezak has also mastered the high-elbow catch. In today's short, silent clip, look closer. Keep you eyes fixed on Jason's inner elbow during the pull. Put your focus on the same point when you go to the pool today. You're going to the pool, right?
Thursday- You can try today's drill with small kickboards or with paddles. Whichever you choose, think about pulling from the inside of the elbow rather than from the palm and forearm.
Friday- As you watch Joao de Lucca's pull pattern, notice how he sets up the pull with a high elbow and Early Vertical Forearm (EVF), but then watch how he seems to pull back from the elbow.
Saturday- Here's another Must-Try drill from Kristian Gkolomeev. It's primarily a balance drill, but it provides another opportunity to practice pulling from the inner elbow. For more of Kristian's innovative drills, pick up a full subscription to GoSwim.cn.
Sunday- Today's video gives you a fun way to turn this week's focus point into an entire set. As you change the surface area of your hand, try to be constant about pulling from the inner elbow. |
