Purpose
- A diving start may be used in some pool competitions and can be really fun to learn
IMPORTANT: Check the water depth! Diving into shallow water is very dangerous Key Points
- Dive from the poolside or from raised start blocks
- Your starter/coach will say “take your marks”
- Put one or both toes over the edge, bend your knees slightly, reach down and hold the edge with your hands
- Feet together, shoulder width or track stance with one forward and one to spring off the back
- When the whistle or gun goes off start the dive
- Chin tucked to chest, lean forward and spring your arms in front of you
- Launch yourself off the blocks trying to get height and length
- Hold your body really straight and streamlined while you enter the water, hands one on top of the other, arms straight tucked behind your head, legs straight, toes pointed and together
- Once fully in the water commence a strong leg kick just at the point that your momentum slows
- Keep kicking until you’re nearly at the surface (a couple of seconds) and break out into full stroke just as you would after any normal torpedo push off from the wall
Common Mistakes
- If you lift your head and look forward too much your legs will drop lower and you’ll ‘belly flop'!
- Tucking your chin in too tight and spearing the water with your hands too vertically will cause you to nose dive too deep into the water
