RACE ANALYSIS

The field had depth and the lead changed multiple times over the course of the race. James Guy of Great Britain moved early against the rest of the final, taking a commanding lead in world record pace at the halfway point. Yet he couldn’t hold his speed and quickly fell behind Mack Horton of Australia and Sun Yang of China. American Connor Dwyer was also in the mix but it was ultimately Horton who charged down Yang on the final 50 to take the gold in a time of 3:41.55.

While the podium finishers stayed within striking distance of the lead for the entirety of the race, medals were awarded not to the swimmers who were most aggressive on the first half, but those who maintained long strokes in the beginning and made their moves in the second half of the race. Mack Horton executed a very controlled swim – he refrained from getting too excited when James Guy took off and kicked his stroke into high gear on the last length to claim gold.
