Common Breaststroke Mistakes and How to Fix Them Mistake #4: Improper Pull The problem: pulling too far back or too wide The fix: use a noodle and drills To correct a pull that goes too far back, use a noodle, placed under the swimmer’s arm pits, and have her pull with the head up…then progress to head-down breaststroke. The noodle keeps the elbows up and prevents the arms from going too far back. Or, you can have the swimmer rest their armpits on a lane line and practice a pull. An exaggeration drill that works wonders is to have the swimmer stand on deck or on the bottom of the pool. Describe the pull as starting with arms in the “I” position. Then slide them into the “Y” position. Then press the forearms down and keep hands parallel to the ground. Keep the elbows still and the hands above the level of the head. Then lead with the thumb side of the hand and match hands above the head, then shoot to extension. If you have a mirror, practice the same motions in the water over the mirror. |
