Thinking of everything that you've learned up to this point and butterfly and thinking of the mantra of float, Diamond, Angel, and swing, you can see the vertical butterfly or pushing off the bottom and jumping out of the water really helps you get a feeling for what the butterfly arm stroke should be.
Find a pool that's deeper than you are tall with your arms extended, crouched down, or squat in the float position, but vertically, push off the bottom. And as you push off, put your hands in diamond, then Angel, and then as you push off and get above water, the arms will swing back to the float position, and you'll sink back underwater. As you work into this, one of the ideas is to build a rhythm of your jumps. You push off the bottom in the float position, put your hands in diamond, then Angel then swing around as you go above the surface of the water.
Your hands are just slightly under the surface, not above. So they're fully connected with the water as you push off the bottom. This is as much about rhythm and setting up a constant up and down motion while the hands have a slight connection on the water. And again practicing all of the same positions that we've been working on in the last few exercises.
